The Ease of ICF Construction Helps the Homeowner and the Contractor

We used to build houses and structures out of plastic building blocks that snapped together when we were kids. Our children still play with these basic and enjoyable toys. This simple method of creating a house or a structure is now accessible on a wider scale. Construction workers no longer have to put up the effort required to create wood houses. Cutting two-by-fours, hammering nails or drilling screws, rolling out insulation, and stapling vapor barriers are no longer required to construct a structure's walls. Instead, polystyrene foam blocks and concrete may now be used to construct the walls of a home or structure.

ICFs (insulated concrete forms) are a more sophisticated method of wall construction. This form of wall construction is simple and results in a structure that is both stronger and more energy-efficient than a regular wood stud wall. The shape is made by stacking polystyrene blocks on top of one another and snapping them into position, much as children do when they construct. Steel rebar is put into the web of the polystyrene blocks while the form is being built. Concrete is poured after the form has been adjusted to the appropriate size and shape of the wall. Because the concrete hardens and seals itself to the form, it becomes ICF insulated concrete.

When compared to plywood forms for concrete, this is a significant difference in ICF installation. The polystyrene shape is integrated into the structure. The two layers of foam, one on the exterior and the other on the interior, offer so much insulation that some of the walls have an R-value of 50. The R-value of a typical wood wall nowadays might be as high as 27.

That is fantastic news for the homeowner, but the ease with which the ICF forms may be installed is good news for the contractor. The whole process of constructing a structure using the best ICF blocks requires less effort on the part of the builders. This less labor-intensive building strategy results in cheaper labor costs, fewer workplace injuries, and happier workers.
